Re-cost your beehiiv email channel before renewal

Turn a renewal notice into a line-item decision before the next invoice lands.

The renewal date sets the deadline

If a beehiiv renewal notice is sitting in your inbox, the first number to pin is the date, not the price. The date sets the deadline for the re-cost. Beehiiv's new pricing starts for new customers on October 1, 2026. Existing customers keep their current plan and price until the first renewal date falls on or after November 1, 2026. Monthly customers get at least 30 days' notice before the first bill at the new price, and annual customers keep the current price through the end of their current annual term.

Re-cost the channel line by line

  • Count the subscribers you actually bill against. Keep only the number your dashboard uses for billing, and exclude unconfirmed signups, test addresses, and imported lists that never receive sends. If the dashboard count and the billing count differ, use the billing count and note the gap. The number should match the tier the vendor uses for the invoice, not the number that looks good in a pitch deck.
  • Map that number to the new tier, then record the plan name and subscriber ceiling. Beehiiv's new Lite plan is the former Scale plan, and its new Pro plan is the former Max plan. If you sit near a boundary, use the higher tier for the re-cost, because the tier is set by the count, not by intent. The ceiling matters more than the label.
  • Build the 12-month cost line. Write the old monthly price, the new monthly price, the dollar delta, and the percentage increase on the same line. City of Houston contract terms require vendors seeking a price increase to provide a line-by-line breakdown of the old price, new price, dollar delta, and percentage increase. Keep the old price visible, because a percentage without the base number is easy to misread. Annualize both lines to a 12-month cost, then compare the annual totals. Ordway Labs' MRR-by-12 method would calculate $120M ARR from $10M in monthly recurring subscription fees. At the 10,000-subscriber tier, beehiiv's Lite plan costs $139 per month, up from $109 per month. At the 10,000-subscriber tier, beehiiv's Pro plan costs $239 per month, up from $219 per month. Paddle's poll of 50 SaaS companies found that 2 out of 5 were including or excluding items incorrectly in ARR calculations.
  • Price the switch, including export time, template rebuild, deliverability warm-up, and migration labor. Add the cost of any missed sends, lost engagement, and the time it takes to re-verify the list. A phased migration can reduce the risk, but it still consumes engineering time and can extend the period before the new channel is fully trusted. A switch is not free even when the new platform is cheaper.
  • Decide renew, move, or downgrade, and write a short recommendation. Beehiiv's old Launch plan becomes the Free plan, supports up to 2,500 subscribers, and now includes Community. The recommendation should name the forcing factor: margin, control, deliverability, or the cost of staying put.

Decide on the delta, not the sticker price

When the annual totals are on the page, argue about the line, not the vendor. Treat platform cost as a unit economics line. The vendor's label is less important than the monthly cost that lands on the invoice. If the channel funds itself, the price change is a margin line. If it does not, the renewal is a decision to keep buying distribution.

Compare the annual delta to the switching cost, then to the revenue the list protects. Move when the delta pays for migration and still leaves margin, downgrade when the list fits a lower tier, and renew when the delta is small, the list is stable, and the switching cost would eat the savings.

Keep the decision reversible

A renewal can be revisited at the next term, a move can be staged, and a downgrade can be tested before the full list migrates. Keep the subscriber export clean, the template assets organized, and the revenue attribution simple enough to re-run the re-cost at the next term.
