Rebase organic numbers for AI Overviews before a false drop
Rebase rank-one CTR and Share of Voice before the board mistakes a model reset for a traffic loss.

Your board asks why organic traffic fell after the model reset. You answer: it did not fall; the measurement changed. Before the next deck goes out, rebase rank-one CTR and Share of Voice to the new baseline so the growth story stays usable.
The board's cliff is a measurement correction
By September 30, 2026, AccuRanker's monitored search results page dataset contained AI Overviews on 66% of desktop search results pages and 59% of mobile search results pages. In the July figures from AccuRanker's October 7, 2026 research, AI Overviews were present on 48% of tracked desktop search results pages and 38% of tracked mobile search results pages. AI Overview presence in monitored desktop commercial and transactional query groups nearly doubled during September. The feature is now part of the click path, not a footnote.
A rank-one result no longer carries the same click weight on every search results page. The same keyword can be a strong traffic source in one month and a weak one in the next, depending on where the AI Overview sits. The reporting risk is presenting a model change as a product problem.
The practical question is whether the organic line can be read without a correction note. If the raw chart shows a drop, the deck should show the rebase first: which search results pages changed, which CTR assumption moved, and what traffic delta remains after the correction.
The board will ask what changed and what to do. Keep the measurement separate from the channel; if you mix them, the channel inherits the model's cliff.
Rebase the CTR assumptions before the meeting
The board does not need a sermon; it needs a clean baseline. Run the checklist in the order you would defend it in a meeting. Each step should produce something you can show, not just something you can say.
If your revenue depends on commercial queries, expect the rebase to matter more. The checklist is short because the board will only remember the post-rebase delta. The rebase is a reporting fix; it prevents a false alarm from triggering a content rewrite, a budget cut, or a panic hire.
- Pull the rank-one keywords from your last SEO report. Keep only terms where you held position one for the full month, not a mixed-position export.
- Mark each search results page where the AI Overview sits above your result. Add a column for above, below, or absent so the CTR assumption can be assigned by placement.
- Replace the old CTR and Share of Voice assumptions with the new baseline. AccuRanker's July 2026 desktop data put position-one organic CTR at 13.0% when no AI Overview was present, 9.8% when one sat below the result, and 4.0% when it sat above. AccuRanker's updated model was scheduled to become operational on October 21, 2026, moving average estimated CTR for tracked desktop rank-one keywords from 22.6% to 10.6%. For Share of Voice, most domains could expect a fall of roughly 35% to 60% under Dynamic CTR, a CTR model, with the median decline at about 48%.
- Check actual traffic in analytics before you explain the change. Build a side-by-side view of clicks, impressions, and average position, with the model reset noted as a reporting change. AccuRanker's October 21, 2026 model update was not a change to rankings or actual Search Console or analytics traffic.
- Label the model reset separately from any real traffic loss. The board note should say the CTR baseline moved, then list only the deltas that remain after the rebase.
Put the reset on its own slide
In the deck, put the rebase on its own slide. Show the old CTR assumption, the new CTR assumption, and the traffic delta after the rebase. If the delta is small, say the SEO work is holding. If the delta is large, name the cause: content decay, a competitor, a technical issue, or a real shift in demand.
Do not bury the reset in an appendix. If the board sees a cliff, they will assume you hid it. Put the label in the title: Organic traffic after CTR rebase or Organic traffic, model reset noted.
