Re-run app unit economics by storefront: Apple's Taiwan fee cut

Treat take rates as storefront variables, recalculate net IAP revenue, CAC payback, and pricing thresholds, and track dated regulatory commitments.

Map the storefront before you touch the model

If your app earns in-app purchases or paid downloads, the Taiwan App Store fee change is a storefront variable. Apple's standard fee for in-app purchases and paid apps in the Taiwan iOS and iPadOS App Store drops from 30 percent to 26 percent on October 31, 2026. Inventory every storefront where you sell, then split gross revenue, active users, conversion, and CAC by storefront. The output is a table with one row per storefront and a dated take-rate column.

Taiwan's Fair Trade Commission accepted Apple's pledge to cut the usual App Store fee in that market from 30 to 26 percent in response to competition concerns. The commission had been examining whether Apple's developer limits, including the Apple tax, broke the Fair Trade Act. The 26 percent rate applies automatically in Taiwan, with no application or extra qualification steps. The lower rate reaches developers on October 31, 2026 without a signature on Apple's revised terms.

Apple said the 26 percent rate would also cover Japan and Brazil, among other markets. The change is confined to the Taiwan iOS and iPadOS storefront, while worldwide App Store terms stay unchanged. Your storefront list may need more rows than the one that changed.

Build the sensitivity check before you reprice

Split the storefront's revenue into standard-rate IAP, paid apps, subscriptions, and any reduced-rate programs. Assign the correct take rate to each line, then calculate net revenue as gross revenue minus the platform fee. Keep the net revenue number traceable to the rate you used.

Recompute CAC payback by storefront. Divide the storefront's CAC by its net revenue per user, then compare the result to your cash runway and target payback window. The payback number should move with the take rate, not hide in a blended company figure.

Reset the pricing threshold. Find the lowest price where net revenue after the storefront take rate still covers CAC and your target margin. If the threshold moves, test the new price in the storefront before you roll it out elsewhere. Averaging the new rate into a global margin line and shipping the old plan is the common mistake.

Reprice the storefront, not the company

Apply the actual delta to the affected storefront. On every 100 Taiwan dollars of eligible standard-rate sales, developers keep 74 dollars instead of 70, while Apple keeps 26 dollars instead of 30. Qualifying Small Business Program developers in Taiwan keep a 15 percent cut under the revised terms; some subscription or partner-program sales get other reduced rates. Restate the storefront profit line with those rates, then compare it to the prior version.

Update the company model only after the storefront model is stable. Feed the new net revenue, CAC payback, and pricing threshold into the company plan, but keep the storefront row visible. Close with a company forecast that can be audited back to the storefront that changed.

Track the dated commitment before it changes

Log the commitment with its effective date, scope, and the condition that would reopen it. The regulator will monitor compliance and can reopen the case if Apple misses the pledge, if material facts shift, or if the decision relied on incomplete or inaccurate information. The model needs a dated row, not a footnote in a news tab.

Watch for related regulatory moves that change the same variable. Apple has already changed Japan and Brazil rules by introducing alternate storefronts, third-party payment paths, and new commission layouts. South Korea's regulators imposed a fine of about $15.5 million on Apple and ordered App Store policy changes on discriminatory commissions, payment limits, plus app review practices. Keep a short list of storefronts with a next review date.

Put the effective date in the same calendar as your board metrics, and assign an owner who can change the rate without waiting for a model rebuild. The end state is a named person and a date, not a hope that someone will notice the change.

When a storefront take rate moves, re-run net IAP revenue, CAC payback, and the pricing threshold before you change the company plan.
