Test AI Search Before Buying an AEO Tool

Run a short prompt-and-answer check to see whether AI search is already feeding your category before you budget for optimization.

Run a prompt-and-answer check before you budget for answer engine optimization. If buyers are not asking AI about your category, a visibility tool will not create demand. If they are asking and your brand is missing, the first fix is usually source content and measurement, not a subscription.

Profound disclosed on September 15, 2026 that Sequoia Capital and Kleiner Perkins jointly led its $180 million Series D, valuing the company at $1.8 billion. The round followed a $96 million Series C by fewer than seven months. The capital shows the category is becoming measurable, not that your startup needs a tool.

The platform is used by more than 1,000 enterprise brands, with customers including Comcast, Walmart, Zoom, ServiceNow, and Figma, and by more than one-third of the Fortune 100. Revenue grew threefold during the six months before the Series D. The customer list is less useful than the shift from guesswork to tracked answers.

A joint study with Listen Labs found that 90% of CMOs use large language models daily, and 85% increased usage over the previous six to 12 months. Your buyers may be asking models for shortlists, pricing signals, and risk checks before they open a sales page.

The platform is built on more than 2 billion real user prompts. Profound's Profound Index, which began in June 2026, was a weekly benchmark of AI-search visibility based on more than 1.5 billion user conversations across 50 industries. Those numbers show what can be tracked. They do not tell you whether your category is ready.

The spend gate is a checklist, not a dashboard

Use the gate before you add AEO to the budget. It has five prompts, three checks, and two triggers. The prompts mirror buyer questions, the checks test brand visibility, and the triggers decide whether AEO spend is justified.

  • Ask an AI assistant what the best [category] tools are for [job]. Note whether your brand appears.
  • Then ask which [category] vendors a [role] should consider. Record the named alternatives.
  • Also ask what customers say about [category] pricing. Check if your site or reviews are cited.
  • Ask what the risks are of choosing a [category] vendor. Note whether your differentiator is mentioned.
  • Finally ask how a [role] should evaluate [category]. See if your comparison content is used.
  • Check whether the answer names your brand at all.
  • Look for a source you control in the answer, such as a doc, case study, or pricing page.
  • Note whether the answer stays stable across repeated sessions.
  • Trigger AEO spend only if your brand appears in any answer and you can trace it to a source you can improve.
  • Trigger AEO spend only if your pipeline already includes AI-sourced inquiries or you can measure them with a form field.

The prompts exist because AEO only helps when the question already exists. If the model returns generic advice, your category may not be a natural AI search channel yet. The answer checks matter because visibility without a citable source is hard to prove. The budget triggers matter because spend should follow evidence, not category momentum.

A weak baseline means fix the source before spend

If your brand is absent, do not buy a tool to make it appear. Build the pages models can cite: a comparison page, a pricing page, a case study, a technical doc, and a FAQ that answers the exact prompt. These are the same assets that improve SEO, but AEO changes the job. The page must be quotable, current, and easy to verify.

Measurement comes before spend. Add a form field asking how they heard about you, with an AI assistant option. Tag the links you use in the test. Save the prompt, the answer, and the source. Without that record, you cannot tell whether a deal came from an AI mention or from a generic web search.

Buy when the baseline justifies the budget

Buy an AEO tool only when your brand already appears in AI answers and you can connect those answers to pipeline. When that baseline holds, the tool can help you expand coverage, monitor competitors, and test content changes. When it does not, the initial purchase should be content and instrumentation, not software.

Paid AI search ads are a separate lever. They can test demand, but they do not replace organic visibility. If distribution is the constraint, run the test before adding AI search to the budget.
